Bikepacking the BC Trail

Ryan and I are scoping out the options to tackle the BC Trail from Vancouver to Fernie. These are based on being able to start driving on the 4th of July and needing to be home by 7/26.

Plan A: BC Trail East & Rainier (est. travel costs — $316 each)

– 7/4: Drive to Van (9h from Bend), stay night at my buddy’s house ($60 fuel total)
– 7/5: Start bike, BC trail to Fernie (~14 days)
– 7/18: Arrive in Fernie (14 days biking is 53 miles per day), camp or Air BnB
– 7/19: Shuttle to Cranbrook airport ($90 each!) Bike from Fernie back to Cranbrook (YXC Airport)
7/20: Fly to Van ($120 each for bikes, $120 each for flight), get car
– 7/21: Rest day in Van
– 7/22: Drive to Rainier, start hike (3 days)
– 7/24: Finish Rainier, camp night
– 7/25: Drive back to Bend & Lakeview ($96 fuel total from Van to Bend)

Plan B: BC Trail East & Bike to Banff (est. travel costs — $322 each)

– 7/4: Drive to Van (9h from Bend), stay night at my buddy’s house ($60 fuel total)
– 7/5: Start bike, BC trail to Fernie and then up to Banff on GDMBR (~16 days)
– 7/20: Arrive in Banff
– 7/21: Day biking/exploring Banff
– 7/22: Bus to Calgary ($51 each), fly to Van ($75 each for flight, $120 each for bikes)
– 7/23: Day in Van, start driving, camp night along drive
– 7/24: Finish drive to Bend & Lakeview ($96 fuel total Van to Bend)

Plan C: BC Trail West & Banff & Glacier NP (est. travel costs — $454 each)

– 7/4: Drive to Fernie (11h from Bend) ($80 fuel total)
– 7/5: Bike BC Trail west to Van (~14 days)
– 7/18: Get to Van, spend a night at my buddy’s and checking out Van
– 7/19: Day in Van
– 7/20: 8:55 AM flight Van —> Cranbrook ($140 each for flights, $120 each for bikes), shuttle from Cranbrook airport to Fernie ($90 each!), grab car and camp on way to Banff ($28 fuel total)
– 7/21: Day in Banff, camp a night in park
– 7/22: Drive to Glacier NP (4.5h not incl. border time), camp two nights
– 7/24: Drive to Bend & Lakeview (11h to Bend, might want to do two days and get home on 7/25) ($100 fuel total for Banff to Bend)
